Managing the complexities of high school can be challenging for most students. Academics, athletics, extracurriculars and friendships can feel overwhelming at times. That’s not the case for high school senior Kevin Benard. He not only enjoys a challenge, he seems to thrive on it.
Kevin is currently the class valedictorian at Pembroke Academy, student class president (a role he’s held all four years) and captain of both the varsity football and varsity lacrosse teams. On top of that, he’s taking college courses online through the Community College System of New Hampshire’s Early College program, working toward dual associate degrees in Business Management and Accounting.
“When I have a lot on my plate, I find I can manage my time better,” Kevin said. “It forces me to come up with a plan given the set parameters. But I can also be a major procrastinator!”
Kevin first heard about the Early College program from a friend at school. That initial conversation led him to research the opportunities available and eventually enroll in courses all while juggling his many other responsibilities and commitments.
“My end goal is to be a civil engineer,” he said. “The courses I’m taking through Early College have provided really helpful life skills that will support me wherever I go.”
And where does Kevin hope to go next? The United States Air Force Academy, a four-year institution that is one of the most selective in the country. To even apply, a candidate must complete a multi-step, competitive process that takes about 18 months from start to finish. Kevin currently has meetings scheduled with members of Congress as part of his effort to obtain a required nomination for the program.
“I’ve taken a communications course through Early College, and it’s been incredibly helpful,” Kevin said. “I attribute my public speaking skills to that class, which will help set me up for success when I meet with Senator Shaheen and Senator Hassan. In front of these very important people, I’ll need to showcase who I am beyond what’s on paper. I’m excited for the opportunity.”
If accepted to the academy, Kevin will commit to at least five years of service to his country, a responsibility he takes seriously.
“My parents want me to go in the direction that I want to,” Kevin said. “They always tell me I’m meant for so much more. I couldn’t have done any of this without their support.”
Kevin is on track to graduate in 2026 from Pembroke Academy and earn his associate degrees in Business Management and Accounting. Whether or not he ultimately attends the Air Force Academy, one thing is certain: with his character, leadership, and drive, Kevin Benard’s future looks exceptionally bright.
The Early College program offers three modalities for high school students: to enroll in their high school, on a community college campus, or 100% online. Courses enable students to get a jump start on their future by earning high school and college credit that is transferable to most colleges and universities or will help them accelerate their career by entering the workforce with an advantage. Eligible New Hampshire students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade get two free courses per year through the Dual and Concurrent Enrollment Scholarship program and a discounted rate for additional courses through the Early College program.
