Where Are they Now?
Richard Horan, MCC Class of 1975, Owner, Precision Imports
Manchester native Richard Horan graduated from MCC (then NH Vocational Technical Institute) in 1975 with an Associate Degree in Automotive Technologies. After a short time at Keene State College, he worked in the automotive field for five years before fulfilling his dream of opening his own business. Now, 32 years later, Precision Imports employs a staff of professionals in a new state-of-the-art facility in Manchester, servicing brands that include Porsche, Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen.
Horan was one of two MCC alums who spoke to graduates at the college's 65th commencement exercises in May 2011. His advice to new graduates is a case of "practicing what he preaches:" Although he graduated more than 30 years ago, Horan exemplifies a lifelong learner - he is an Automotive Service Excellence Master Technician, a Bosch Master Technician, and a graduate of the Automotive Management Institute.
"Don’t let this diploma be the end of your education; whether your new degree is in auto tech, or welding, or graphic design or computer science, keep learning! Take the time to keep up with the newest technology and the newest thinking… this will keep you interested in your field, and increase your value to your company. Let your boss know you’re eager for more training, even on your own time. Take advantage of every training opportunity that comes your way."
His second piece of advice: "Give back. Get involved in business organizations in your field that work to improve it, to educate upcoming workers." Following his own advice, Horan has served on the college’s Automotive Advisory Board for 16 years (several as chair), and on the auto program steering committee at the Manchester School of Technology. He also is a member of the New Hampshire Automotive Education Foundation (NHAEF) Board, and is a past chairman and current member of the Bosch Authorized Service Council. Precision Imports offers co-op opportunities to MCC automotive students.
The father of four grown children, Horan lives with his wife Karen in Manchester.
