Meet some of our military/Veteran students: Jim

Jim graduated high school in Newport, NH in 1995 and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He signed up for a four-year enlistment as a construction engineer, and then remained in the Marine Corps Reserves, stationed at Fort Devens until 2001 when he signed up for another four-year enlistment, this time as a Combat Engineer. He served on many deployments and did a tour in Iraq in 2003.

Jim left active duty in 2005 and started his own construction business. Then, in 2008 he joined the Army as a Drill Sergeant attached to a reserve unit in Londonderry, NH.

In 2010, Jim decided to attend college on a part-time basis. Unsure of what field to pursue, he enrolled in the General Education program at River Valley CC.

Jim mobilized with a Drill Sergeant Unit to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for a year, but the seeds of a college education had been sown. He returned home with a desire to enter a profession that helps others. He identified the field of physical therapy, and eventually gained admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant program.

“Now, here I am in the program and a recent inductee in Phi Theta Kappa [the community college academic honor society], and I couldn’t be happier,” Jim reflected. “The instructors that I have dealt with at RVCC are exceptionally knowledgeable, well versed in job related experience and supportive of the student body.”
