Internships Create Pathways for NHTI IT Students

Community college students across New Hampshire participate in internships to strengthen education-to-career pathways.  From fields as diverse as hospitality, automotive technology, business and computer technologies, students are learning about employer expectations and seeing the real-world application of their knowledge. 

At NHTI, Concord’s Community College, internship programs are a mandatory component of the Information Technologies programs. 

NHTI provides students with a comprehensive IT education. The cornerstone of this education is the IT Internship. During the spring semester of their senior year, IT students complete a 100-hour (minimum) internship that is meaningful and relevant to their field of study. Internships are mutually beneficial to students and employers alike.  Students get the opportunity to apply concepts and skills learned in the classroom, as well as gain hands-on work experience.

Employers utilize students to do meaningful work and get an opportunity to assess potential employees.

NHTI’s IT Program offers two main career training options:  Networking, and Applications Development. All students receive entry-level training for core competencies, which include Windows Server, Comp TIA A+ Certification Prep, and Database Design & Management.  The Networking specialization includes instruction in four Cisco Academy Courses Leading to CCNA Certification, VMware Certified Professional (VCP) Prep,  and Introduction to VoIP IT Networking Security.  The Applications Development specialization includes instruction in C#, Java, ASP.NET, Data Structures and Algorithms,  XML, XAML, LINQ, WPF, & WCF, MTA Software Development Fundamentals, and Certification Prep.

Employers are expected to provide a supervisor to assign and monitor internship responsibilities, ensure that the intern engages in tasks relevant to his or her field of study, communicate with NHTI to discuss the intern’s progress, and complete a brief evaluation of the intern’s performance.  Interns are expected to perform in a professional manner, arrive to work on time, dress appropriately, adhere to the company’s culture, and utilize their education to gain valuable real-world experience. 

Some of the companies at where NHTI IT students have interned include: FairPoint Communications, InfoWave Technologies, BID2WIN Software, Inc., Concord Group Insurance, ePlus Technology, Inc., Northeast Delta Dental, RTM Communications, Inc., PC Connection, DSCI, State of NH, Concord High School, Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital, and Buy Book Technologies.

According to Tom Laurie, Department Head for NHTI’s IT Department, “The NHTI IT Department produces students trained in leading edge technologies from ASP.NET, ADO.NET, VoIP, VMWare to the latest CISCO curriculum.  Our students are always looking in the fall to find compatible internships for the spring where they will put to use their classroom learning.  A 100-hour internship is a great way to try out a potential employee.”
