Where Are They Now?
Steve Gordon, Cornish, N.H.
River Valley Class of 2000, Massage Therapy program
Steve is a newspaper editor and writer turned massage therapist, who uses his massage training to help cancer patients in the Upper Valley. After nearly 20 years in journalism, Steve enrolled in River Valley Community College’s massage therapy program. Upon completing the program and becoming licensed, he worked briefly in both fields and then left journalism to focus on his new vocation. Early in his massage therapy training, Steve began providing massage to oncology patients at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. In 2008 he founded The Hand to Heart Project, a nonprofit program that provides free, in-home massage to people with advanced cancer.
Steve continues to incorporate education with community service. This spring, massage students at River Valley organized a fund-raiser that collected nearly $4,000 for Hand to Heart while giving the students some of the supervised practice hours required to complete their program.
“It’s hard to imagine a better fit than a group of massage therapy students raising money for a program like Hand to Heart,” Gordon said.
