Ten Community College Projects Selected for Innovation Funding

I am very pleased to announce the second-round projects selected for Innovation Fund support. The projects were selected from a very strong pool of applications. Along with the funders and judges, I was extremely impressed with the quality of the ideas and plans brought forward. This year submissions increased by over 60%. We have a strong group of ten winners, including three that involve multiple college collaboration. These projects can have a significant impact on student success and on the alignment of our programs and curriculum with important educational and economic goals. Projects were developed by faculty, staff and administrators and represent important trends and innovative opportunities in the content and delivery of higher education. The judges were Jesse Devitte, Jeremy Hitchcock, Ali Rafieymehr, Bill Beyer, Kristyn Van Ostern and me.
As you may recall, the Innovation Fund was established by private funders who are venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and business people in New Hampshire. Funders include Paul Holloway, Chairman of the Holloway Automotive Group and Chairman of the CCSNH Board of Trustees; Craig Benson, technology entrepreneur and former Governor of the State of NH; Jeremy Hitchcock, CEO of Dyn, Inc. and a member of the CCSNH Board of Trustees; Jesse Devitte, Managing Director and Co-founder of Borealis Ventures; and Matt Pierson, Director and past Chairman of the NH High Technology Council and Managing Director with Dunn Rush & Co. The purpose of the Fund is to foster innovative ideas within the State’s network of community colleges.
Please join me in congratulating the individuals and teams below whose projects were selected for funding.
Hybrid Science Course Development, Mary Orff, Science Professor, WMCC. This project will develop a high quality online/hybrid lab science course for students at WMCC and CCSNH.
Motivating Students through Enhanced Math Preparedness, Kate Sawal, Department Chair, NHTI. This innovation will create a mathematics “refresher course” during the summer using Khan Academy content that allows students to brush-up on their math skills and by-pass remedial math courses altogether and this will be at no cost to students.
Creating a Remote Learning Environment, Robin Saunders, Program Director, RVCC. This initiative will use lecture capture to allow students from remote rural areas to attend lectures using their computer, smart phone or mobile device and significantly decreasing travel time and allow for instruction during inclement weather.
Innovating Software Developer Training, Will Arvelo, President, GBCC. The training program creates a coordinated effort, endorsed and partially funded by NH businesses, to train software developers to meet the need of industry.
Creating Online Classes in Early Childhood Education, Patricia Finnigan-Allen, Department Chair, WMCC and Gale Hall, Department Chair, NHTI. This project establishes a more authentic learning experience for online and evening ECE students by creating video documentation of course competencies and developing videos from the Lab School to expose online and evening students to best practice in ECE courses.
Associate Degree Level Curriculum in Applied Data Analytics, Jere Turner, Director of Institutional Research (MCC) and Mary Rudis, Associate Professor (GBCC). This innovation will establish a certificate program in Applied Data Analytics by developing a curriculum of workshops, coursework and courses.
TechCitement – Building Online Teaching & Learning Communities, Kate Guerdat, Associate VPAA (MCC). This project will create a cross-college, cross-disciplinary mentor program for new and seasoned online faculty aimed at supporting technology integration.
First Year Experience Course for Engineering Science, Diane King, Center for Teaching & Learning Coordinator, GBCC. This initiative will develop a three-credit college success course for the Engineering Science program aimed to improve retention in the program by integrating relevant and purposeful STEM career and transfer field perspectives and skill sets.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology Pathways Initiative, John Cook, VPAA, MCC. This innovation will deploy a marketing campaign that creatively showcases the Accelerated Advanced Manufacturing Pathway program available with Milford High School to ensure that students enrolled in technical programs at Milford High School know about the pathway which includes 12 college credits.
Cross-Campus Collaboration in the Delivery of Core STEM Education, Leslie Barber, Professor (GBCC), Steven Oliver (LRCC), Rich Andrusiak (RVCC) and Bonnie Akerman (RVCC). This project establishes course-sharing methodologies to support participation of students from system campuses in established STEM core courses to broaden student access to mathematics and science courses.
I look forward to seeing these ideas progress and ultimately strengthen CCSNH’s contributions to education and workforce development in New Hampshire.
