Concord, N.H. - Community College System of New Hampshire Paul J. Holloway of Rye, Chairman of the Board of the Community College System of NH, was honored with an award for trustee leadership from the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) at an awards ceremony in Boston on March 6. The David C. Knapp Award for Trusteeship is presented to a person who is currently serving or formerly served as a trustee on the board of a New England higher educational organization, with an outstanding record of accomplishment as a trustee, and who is dedicated to promoting the relationship between higher education and the New England economy. In presenting the award, NH State Representative and NEBHE board member Marjorie Smith (Durham), called Paul and Anna Grace Holloway "emblematic of ideal American citizenship," volunteering their time and efforts to a cause that helps thousands of their fellow citizens and impacts future generations. Holloway has been Chairman of the Community College System of NH board since 2005. Under his leadership, the community college system has increased enrollment, undertaken major facilities and program enhancements, and achieved passage of legislation making the system self-governing under its Trustees rather than a state agency. While Holloway currently leads the community college system board, his career as an advocate for public education in New Hampshire spans four decades. He was a trustee of the University System of NH for 16 years (1972 - 1988) serving as Chairman from 1985-1988, and has supported numerous initiatives to strengthen public higher education in NH. In accepting the award, Holloway said that to understand the importance of advocating for public higher education one need only attend a community college graduation, and witness the ways people can change their lives and strengthen their family circumstances. Holloway said he is continually inspired by the hard work and dedication of those who choose to pursue higher education, as well as those who work in higher education. Holloway's nomination, made by community college system chancellor Richard Gustafson, was supported by Gov. John Lynch, Dr. Kathryn Dodge, Executive Director of the NH Postsecondary Education Commission, and Thomas Horgan, President of the NH College & University Council. They cited Holloway's determination, his concern for improving the lives of students, and his business acumen as assets in his role supporting public higher education in New Hampshire. About CCSNH |
