Lakes Region Community College Celebrates Oktoberfest with New Brewing and Fermentation Certificate

Future brewers and vintners learn production and operations skills to work in fast-growing craft brewing industry

Laconia, New Hampshire – Beer, October, and college. Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) is bringing the three together in a productive and educational way. Sparked by industry demand and the rising popularity of craft brewing beer, wine and cider, LRCC has created a one-year certificate program to train the next generation of brewers and vintners. Launched this fall, the three-semester program is preparing students with the knowledge needed to secure careers in brewing and fermentation.

“We collaborated with local experts to integrate the skills they value into the curriculum,” said Carlene Rose, department chair of business technologies and culinary arts. “The enthusiasm for this program throughout the craft brewing and culinary community is immense, and we’re excited to see how it evolves.”

The brewing program’s first class of students will spend the coming months learning basic principles of brewing. The first semester of the program focuses on brewing and fermentation fundamentals, including: sanitation and safety; wine, cider, beer, and mead production; and how to pair foods with fermented beverages to enhance flavor and culinary experience. During the program’s second semester, students explore the business of breweries and wineries, as well as specific production and operation skills. The final semester centers on a 400-hour internship where students gain hands-on experience at area breweries and see brewing principles in action.

The brewing certificate, is appropriate for brewers of all levels, and those who complete the certificate program will meet or exceed the expertise needed for an entry-level brewer position in New Hampshire. Classes are also available to individuals who are not enrolled in the program but wish to take a class of their choosing.
