Manchester Community College partners with CVS Health to offer Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program

Hands-on program for pharmacy students first of its kind in Granite State

Manchester, NH - Manchester Community College (MCC) and CVS Health have partnered to launch a new Pharmacy Technician Certification Program – the first of its kind in New Hampshire. The program pairs classroom instruction with an externship at CVS Pharmacy – a  subsidiary of CVS Health – and  gives students practical, real-world experience as they prepare for their Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exams.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program is a hands-on and highly valuable opportunity for students to put their educational background to practical use on the front lines.  Pharmacy technicians are a key part of a pharmacy team, assisting with filling prescriptions, dosage calculations, IV flow rates, drug compounding, billing and reimbursement and other tasks directly related to patient care and customer service. The pharmacy field is projected to rise by 9% by 2024, and employment of pharmacy technicians and aides is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. With the state’s workforce skills gap on the minds of many Granite State employers, the latest partnership at MCC’s Worforce Development Center is helping employees develop the in-demand skills in industries that drive the state’s economy.

“The landscape of education and training has changed significantly in the past few years as we place an intense focus on skills and creative ways to work with employers in our community who require proficiency in very specific areas,” said Kristine Dudley, director at MCC’s Workforce Development Center. “With partnerships such as the one between MCC and CVS Health, we’re developing job referral pathways and a highly skilled workforce that will benefit the state, communities and families for generations to come.”

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program at MCC is certified by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and arms graduates with the skills they need to make an immediate contribution to an employer upon graduation. Students complete 84 hours of classroom time at MCC over 12 weeks followed by an 80-hour externship with CVS Pharmacy. During this time students are supervised by a registered CVS pharmacist as they apply what they’ve learned in the classroom into the pharmacy setting.

Upon program completion, students take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). Graduates have the chance to interview with CVS Pharmacy for an available position as a pharmacy technician or can pursue other opportunities in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies or other healthcare settings.

“Through our workforce initiatives department at CVS Health, we partner with likeminded organizations by rolling up our sleeves to create programs from the ground up that meet the specific needs of our community,” said Jonathan DaSilva, the regional learning center manager for CVS Health. “Our goal is to provide a clinical experience to MCC students that will ready them for a career as a pharmacy technician. We do this by providing transferable skills training and key experiences that align with the National Pharmacy Technician Certification model. This allows the students to work in a pharmacy setting like ours, in a hospital, or various other career path options that exist for pharmacy technicians anywhere in the United States.”

The first group of students in the Pharmacy Technician Certification Program completed their class training in early June and will soon enter into the externship part of the program with CVS.
